"You've got to be joking," Jesse (PNPC) said as he looked between the Trill seated across from him and the yeoman on his left. It didn't take a Betazoid's empathic sense to tell him there was no humor in what either of them were saying, though it came as somewhat of a surprise that this was the first time he'd actually heard about what Vaer (PNPC) had just said. "First off, why would the captain even be taking flight certifications," the young counselor asked of no one in particular, "and secondly...who in the world would be crazy enough to just barely pass him?"

"That would be Lieutenant Blackfur," Edward (PNPC) replied, taking another swallow from his glass, "and as for why the captain took the test in the first place...I heard he used to be the Chief Flight Controller under Admiral Androski aboard the Orlando."

"Spreading rumors about the captain, are we?" Joe asked suddenly, appearing as if from nowhere. He noted the younger officers' startled looks with satisfaction. Still got it in me, he thought to himself. Of course, relaxed officers in a lounge weren't really the same as hardened pirates or Jem'Hadar, but it was still nice to know he could sneak up on people.

There was a slight shuffle as each of the young men started to rise from their seat, then realized they were not on duty and therefore not expected to stand at attention, yet were sufficiently startled by the commander's sudden interjection that they were no longer as casual as they had been only moments before. Each of them exchanged a quick glance as if silently arguing over who would speak first. It wasn't a moment more before an unspoken decision was made. "Uhh...no sir," Christian replied emphatically, "we were just..."

"You were just keeping appraised of current events," Torin interjected with a grin on his face as he stopped beside Commander Thompson. He had never been good at sneaking but then again, with the junior officers in their current state of shock he didn't have to. "I'm sure Captain Naros would be humbled to know that you all pay such close attention to detail."

The young men seemed to have shaken off the vestiges of their surprise and regained some semblance of composure which certainly put Jesse more at ease not having to deal with their sudden alarm in addition to his own. Christian and Edward both smiled at the lieutenant's remarks as they settled back into their chairs. "Just trying to sort out fact from fiction, sirs," Marshall (PNPC) said, looking from the commander to his new supervisor, "Everyone knows the only way to avoid the scuttlebutt is to stay one step ahead of it."

"True enough," Torin replied with a nod. He glanced between the faces of those seated at the table and his gaze lingered slightly longer on the other Trill present than the others. "I'm Torin Drell, head of Operations as of about an hour ago."

"And I'm Joe Thompson, Security Chief," Joe said. "You can call me 'Commander'." He winked, leaving them in the precarious position of wondering whether he was serious or not.

"Marshall Doering, Assistant Chief of Operations," Marshall said automatically before realizing that both men knew exactly who he was. He'd done some work with the commander earlier in the week regarding configuration of the tactical sensor array and his own supervisor...well, they'd just met only a little while before. "Soooo," the young man continued, "going around this way we have Christian Bates, captain's yeoman; Jesse Gael, counselor; Edward Stuart, shuttle pilot; and Azur Vaer, Flight Control Officer."

Torin nodded to each of those seated before him politely but his eyes remained on Azure Vaer as the introductions ended. Torin had never heard of the Trill but Drell on the other hand was well acquainted with the Vaer symbiont. That was what Torin had recognized in his comrades eyes, or rather Drell had. "Its a pleasure to meet you all," he said without taking his eyes from Azur. "Is there room here for a couple more?"

There was another round of quickly exchanged glances amongst the five young men as they silently considered the lieutenant's request. It wasn't every day two of the ship's senior officers asked to join a table of junior officers. Maybe it was one of those old naval traditions or maybe it was simply a social circle thing, but people generally tended to sit with others of their own kind except for a few special circumstances. No one had ever really come across an official policy or rule about it...that's just the way it was.

"Sorry...of course, sirs," Marshall replied, setting aside his drink so he could pull over another chair for the lieutenant.

Fully aware - and not quite caring - that he and his new companion were probably violating some unspoken rule about sitting with junior officers, Joe let Drell choose a seat before sliding calmly into the other. Looking around, Joe offered a grin. "So," he said. "What's this I hear about the captain and his flight certification?"
