A Visit to the Midway

Posted on Thu May 3rd, 2012 @ 10:08am by Captain Tobias Naros & Petty Officer 3rd Class Christian Bates & Yuris Eldar & Greg Letsky

Mission: Episode 1.0 - "Enduring Legacy"
Location: Corridor - Deck Six, USS Yorktown
Timeline: Mission Day 01, 0738 Hours

ON: [[Corridor - Deck Six, USS Yorktown, Mission Day 01, 0738]]

Christian (PNPC) stepped out into the corridor after Commander Naros and the two began making their way further along. The first stop on their tour had been the Yorktown's primary sickbay, a state-of-the-art medical facility capable of handling the wide variety of scenarios which could be expected when operating on the Federation frontier. Unfortunately, their visit had been rather underwhelming, especially when one considered the fact a majority of the senior medical staff had not yet arrived. It was a story which was likely to be repeated with nearly every one of the locations Christian had planned and he almost wondered if he should have refrained from offering the tour for the time being.

The young man's hesitation did not escape Tobias' notice as they continued along the corridor. He was well aware there were still a number of personnel yet to arrive including members of his own senior staff. It did not concern him in the slightest the Chief Medical Officer had not been present to greet him on his first visit to sickbay nor was he surprised that several other key staff positions were still working their way to being filled. Yet Tobias could tell from his yeoman's silence their visit to sickbay had not gone as well as the petty officer might have hoped.

"Tell me a little about yourself, Mister Bates," Tobias suggested, nodding to a pair of technicians heading in the opposite direction, "I understand you come from the North Star Colony...and that you have the distinction of being the first Skagaran to serve in Starfleet."

Christian felt the back of his neck grow warm. He knew being the first person from North Star Colony to serve in Starfleet was something most people were going to notice when they looked at his service record, but that didn't keep him from feeling sometimes as if the 'distinction' was really more of a 'limitation'. "Half-Skagaran, actually...sir," Christian corrected, "My father was Skagaran and my mother was human."

"I see," Tobias said thoughtfully. The petty officer's reaction to his query had been relatively subtle, but it confirmed what Tobias already suspected to be the case. Individuals rarely appreciated being identified by a single trait, especially one as inpersonal as their racial heritage, and Petty Officer Bates was no exception. He may have been the first individual with Skagaran heritage to serve in Starfleet, but it was a description which barely scratched the surface of who this young man was...or who he could become.

They continued for several steps without either of them saying a word until they turned the next corner. Two large, wooden doors marking the entrance to the Yorktown's main lounge were clearly visible ahead, as was a smaller door providing access to the ship's turbolift system. Christian had not really intended for their tour to include the lounge as it wasn't one of the usual locations included in an initial assessment. Seeing as no one had really been into our out of the room since the Yorktown had left drydock aside from the establishment's owner and one other young man about Christian's age who had come aboard with him, Christian wasn't even sure if he should say something about it or continue with the tour as planned. He had just stepped up to the turbolift door when the commander walked right past him and through the now open lounge doors. Guess that answers that, he thought to himself as he turned away from the turbolift to follow the commander.

Tobias paused just inside the threshold of the darkened lounge and slowly surveyed the room from the bar along one wall to the large viewports running along the opposite bulkhead. The lounge was one of the few public places aboard Federation starships known for taking on an appearance of its own, uniquely distinct from those aboard other starships. Those starships large enough to be equipped with such a facility often considered it to be an integral part of the ship's identity.

"Good morning," a blonde-haired gentlemen said from behind the counter, "I'm afraid we're still closed until tomorrow evening. Is there something I can help you with?"

The gentleman's sudden introduction caused Petty Officer Bates to jerk his head around in the direction of the bar and Tobias could see the yeoman had not been expecting to come across anyone in the darkened lounge, yet it stood to reason the lounge staff would be just as interested in getting things ready for their first assignment as anyone else on board. Tobias slowly turned his attention from the viewports so that he was facing toward the establishment's owner. "Petty Officer Bates was just giving me the nickel and dime tour," he explained, "and I thought we might poke our heads in for a few moments to see how things were going."

"Yuris (PNPC)," a voice called from somewhere beyond the kitchen doors, "where did you want me to..." The speaker trailed off as he appeared in the doorway to find two visitors standing only a short distance away. "...oh, sorry," he said somewhat sheepishly, "I didn't realize..."

"The two of you certainly seem to have things well in hand here," Tobias observed with a reassuring smile in the newcomer's direction, "and I suspect Mister Bates has more he would like to be showing me, isn't that right?"

"Yes, sir," Christian agreed, "at the captain's discretion, of course..."

"Right," Tobias said, "then I suppose we shall be on our way. It was a pleasure meeting you both. I expect we will be hearing great things about this place amongst the crew before we know it."

Yuris watched the Yorktown's commanding officer and his yeoman disappear once more through the large wooden doors. Unannounced visits were sometimes the most insightful experiences one could hope to have, especially when managing an establishment such as the Midway Lounge. There was no doubt in Yuris' mind they would be seeing the captain again soon.
