Personal History Yuris Eldar was born in the Earth year 1620 on the El-Aurian homeworld. His parents, Kelcek and Taris Eldar, were both involved in the government of El-Auria. As a benefit of his parents' positions and influence, Yuris was the recipient of the finest education and the best opportunities that El-Auria had to offer. Not much else is known about Yuris' early years on his species' homeworld aside from the fact that his family continued to play a major role in promoting the further exploration of various regions of the galaxy.

Deciding that he'd much rather explore the galaxy and learn of other species, Yuris set out to make his own path in the cosmos. His journey took him to countless worlds, each with their own stories to share. After years of wandering, Yuris stumbled upon a rather unremarkable system. It contained nine planets orbiting a single, medium-type star. The young El-Aurian nearly passed the system by until he noticed that it contained one habitable planet. Upon closer inspection, he realized that this planet not only could support life, but that it did support a young civilization. Yuris found himself fascinated by the prospect of such an intriguing species as inhabited this remote oasis. He decided that in order to learn more about them, he must walk among them.

Yuris put his vessel down in a remote area of woodland along the coast of one of the northern continents some distance away from a small village. The village was Salem, Massachusetts and the year was 1692. Despite Yuri's best efforts to prevent contamination, his arrival did not go unnoticed. Within days, the entire village was embroiled in a merciless witch hunt that would eventually claim the lives of twenty individuals. Yuri managed to escape Salem, but was appalled at the apparent barbaric nature of these creatures known as "humans". He realized that he had grossly underestimated them and knew that if he was to ever forgive himself that he needed to truly learn about these people.

As the years passed, Yuris continued to live amongst the humans, always on the move. Never again did he allow himself to be as careless as he had in Salem. He traveled the world, explored regions exotic and enlightening, and learned about the human race. Sometimes he would live as a merchant or a farmer, always doing his best to remain inconspicuous. Invariably, his travels always returned him to the nation-state known as the United States.

During one such return stay in the 1800s, Yuris found himself in the city of San Fransisco. It was here that he encountered another El-Aurian, Madame Guinan. Yuris was surprised and overjoyed to learn that another member of his species had come to Earth. It had been some time since he had made any contact with his own people. He and Guinan compared their understandings of the human culture and she told him of the continued efforts of his parents back on El-Auria to promote a greater understanding of other species. Eventually, Guinan chose to leave Earth to return to El-Auria. Yuris was alone once again.

As time continued to advance, so did the human race. Their rate of technological development indicated that it wouldn't be long before they had the capability to locate Yuris' vessel. It had come time for Yuris to make a fateful decision. He could either leave Earth and return to his people or stay. In his first and only message to the homeworld since arriving on Earth, Yuris contacted his own parents and told them of his experiences among the humans. When he spoke of the difficult decision that lay before him, Kelcek and Taris assured him that no matter what he decided, they would always be proud of him. In the end, Yuris chose to destroy his vessel rather than allow it to fall into the hands of any of the nation-states of Earth.

Following Earth's Second World War, Yuris returned to Salem, Massachusetts for the first time since 1692. He was mildly surprised to find no mention of himself in the records of the event known as the Salem Witch Trials. In all the years that he had traveled the world, he had not once chosen to look back to Salem and thus, he was not aware of the full effect of the events he set into motion. Reading the records of the trials and executions of twenty innocent lives brought back a pang of guilt that Yuris had tried so hard to escape. He chose to settle down in Salem for a time, rather than running again. For many years, he worked as a caretaker at a museum, providing an account of the events as human history saw them, until he was forced to move on or risk being discovered.

Yuris continued to move from place to place, never lingering long for fear that his nature might be betrayed by the slower aging process of his people. In the many lifetimes he had "lived" among the humans, Yuris had learned much about the human race. He had also gained many possessions and much wealth, despite often living well within his means and never seeking advancement or notoriety. Inginuity, understanding, and a little bit of luck all had a hand in allowing him to survive the conflicts of the Twentieth and Twenty-First centuries. It was a time that he considered to be a very dark page in human history. Cochrane's famous warp flight initiated First Contact with the Vulcans and lifted Earth out of its second dark age.

When Starfleet began recruiting for Earth's first warp starships, Yuris decided that he would follow humanity into space. It wasn't as easy as it sounded. Knowing that he would have to reveal his true identity sooner or later, Yuris was faced with another difficult decision. To join Starfleet was to place himself in danger of being exposed. On the other hand, he could not be certain how they would react if he revealed his identity to them. He had managed to make it almost five hundred years on Earth without being discovered. Yet, if he chose to reveal himself, he would have a greater control over the situation.

In the end, Yuris chose not to approach Starfleet, but he joined anyway. Following the Academy, he was assigned to the Challenger NX-03 as a science officer, where he participated in the cataloguing and study of countless worlds and stellar phenomena. It was the frontier age of Starfleet exploration and Yuris was proud to be part of such a monumental task. Still, the threat of exposure hung over him and there were many close calls. His luck ran out when the Challenger made first contact with a species known as the Wa'adu.

As part of an exchange of information, Yuris shuttled over to the Wa'adu vessel to present them with a copy of the Challenger's cultural database in exchange for Wa'adu starcharts and sensor data on a Class-2 Nebula that was forming nearby. The two ships were caught in a shockwave from the nebula and Yuris was injured when his shuttlepod was impacted by the wavefront. He awoke in the Challenger's sickbay to see the ship's doctor, a Wa'adu physician, and Captain S'lar standing over him. Wa'adu medical science was more advanced than that of Starfleet and they had detected the differences in Yuris' El-Aurian physiology. The game was up.

Yuris was brought before a Starfleet tribunal for enlisting under a false identity. Although he explained the reasons and motives behind his actions, Yuris admitted that he had made an error in judgement. The presiding officer, Admiral Blackwell, ruled that Yuris be discharged from Starfleet and placed in custody until the full ramifications of his actions could be ascertained. Blackwell's ruling was challenged by advocate Commander Alexander Mueller. Mueller managed to reduce the sentence to a simple discharge from Starfleet, providing that Yuris would relate an account of his presence and experiences on Earth to Federation historians.

Years passed and Yuris watched the Federation continue to grow and expand. He spent a number of years travelling both within and outside the Federation's borders, continuing his personal mission of exploration. Eventually, he settled down on Earth and opened a bibliothek in San Fransisco. It was here that he first heard word of the Enterprise-B and the El-Aurian refugees that they had rescued from a strange spacial anomaly. To his surprise, Guinan turned up outside his shop a few days later with ill news.

She explained to Yuris about the Borg and how they invaded El-Auria. His first concern was the fate of his parents, but Guinan was unable to tell him whether they had escaped. Yuris was devastated. While he had been living among the humans, his own people had been fighting a losing battle. With his homeworld assimilated, his people scattered to the corners of the galaxy, Yuris turned to the only thing he had left...humanity.

Yuris decided that it was time for him to try Starfleet again. Before he could re-enter, he needed to deal with the discharge that remained on his record. He appeared before a Starfleet tribunal to petition that the discharge be dismissed. After three days of deliberations, statements, and evidence presentation, the tribunal ruled that Yuris' commission be reinstated. He was immediately reactivated as a lieutenant and assistant chief science officer aboard the USS Antigo, where he continued to serve under several commanding officers until the vessel was decommissioned in 2354. Yuris was then transferred, along with a number of Antigo personnel, to the USS Madison where he continued to serve until the outbreak of the Dominion War.

In the almost six hundred and eighty years that Yuri had been living amongst humans, he had done his best to avoid taking part in the numerous conflicts and wars that had taken place during that time. Unlike those previous conflicts, Yuris found that he had a very real stake in the Dominion War. He had adopted humanity the Federation as his new home and humanity had become his new people. The outcome of this war, he knew, would affect many lives, including his own.

The Madison suffered heavy damage during the Dominion invasion of Betazed. For two days, the crew attempted to evade Dominion patrols, eventually taking refuge in a nearby nebula. They focused their efforts on restoring their warp drive in hopes of returning to friendly lines. When they emerged from the nebula, the Dominion was waiting for them. In her weakened state, the Madison didn't stand a chance. Yuri was one of six crewmembers whose escape pod managed to escape the destruction of the ship. The pods drifted through space for nearly a week before they were picked up by the USS Perseus.

Each of the Madison survivors underwent evaluation before being reassigned to various areas of high need. Yuris reported to Starfleet Command where his services were required to assist in analysis of battlefield reports and sensor records. He was present during the Breen Raid on San Fransisco and participated in the clean-up efforts following. When the war ended in 2375, Yuris made the decision to take his leave of Starfleet, despite offers at promotion. He returned to his bibliothek and within two years, had expanded it to include a cafe that quickly drew the patronage of cadets, officers, and civilians alike.

In early 2386, a friend in the Starfleet Corps of Engineers with whom Yuri had served during the Dominion War suggested that he might consider returning to Starfleet. The development of the new Luna-class vessels seemed to be right down Yuris' path. Yet, like most El-Aurians, Yuris had never been hasty in his decision-making. Yuris decided to take the middle ground and managed to procure a space on the Luna-class USS Pandora to open an establishment. Leaving the bibliothek cafe in the care of his assistant, Yuris departed for the Pandora to take ownership of the Orient Express lounge.

Yuris continued to manage the Orient Express Lounge for nearly two years before Vice Admiral Iluvar received orders from Starfleet Command to assume command of Operation Sunrise. Many of those who had served under Iluvar up to that point chose to remain aboard the Pandora while others were given new assignments aboard other vessels. Yuris saw such change as an opportunity for himself as well and arranged for someone to take responsibility for the Orient Express before proceeding to purchase space aboard the Legacy-class USS Yorktown with which to establish the Midway Lounge.
