"Any idea what this meeting is supposed to be about," Edward (PNPC) asked casually as he and Azur (PNPC) emerged from the turbolift and began making their way toward the Flight Control Office.
"The usual, I presume," Azur replied. This would mark the fourth welcoming briefing the two young officers had attended since the two of them had first been assigned to the Mariner as roommates. After having been through the same rigmarole three times already, it was not that much of a stretch to assume this time would be any different.
Edward moved to step behind the young Trill as they passed several technicians heading the opposite direction before falling into step alongside his friend. "I heard we've got a cat for a CFCO," he whispered with a sardonic smile, "think there's any truth in that?"
It never ceased to amaze Azur how easily Edward was able to keep up with the latest scuttlebutt. Whether they were aboard ship, laying over at a starbase, or visiting planetside, he always seemed to know what was going on...albeit with a perspective that was sometimes out-of-step. "Don't tell me they didn't have Catians serving in Starfleet back then," Azur said, "I know they weren't exactly as proliferous as humans or Vulcans, but look at how long Trill have been serving..."
"I've always been more of a dog person, myself," Edward replied with a short laugh, causing Azur to shake his head slowly from side to side.
"Don't let her catch you saying that," Azur told him as they came to a stop outside the Flight Control Office, "or she's libel to toss you out the nearest airlock."
[[Flight Control Office]]
Miranda looking over the last of the personel records, making notes on another. The two she called to her office for a private meeting along with others she had chosen, had some excellent quailties about them and were ready for superviser positions. She was dressed casual in loose flowing robes with her combadge pinned where it would normally be if she was in uniform.
No sooner had the door opened than Azur realized there was no way this was a meeting of the entire department. The office definitely wasn't large enough to hold everyone who fell under the designation 'Flight Control'. Even the few people who were already present took up a considerable amount of space.
"Now that the stragglers are here," Miranda looked up at the two entering. "Please be quiet when you get your refreshments."
"Sorry, ma'am," the young Trill said, entering the room with Edward immediately following, allowing the door to close behind them.
Turning to the few that were present and Stuart and Vaer as she leaned back in her seat. "Assignments as follows, Stuart.. you have Gamma bridge watch as Senior Pilot and Vaer you're secondary back-up pilot..." She gave the rest of the others more prestigious position within the department as Shift Chiefs of Shuttle Management, Bravo Shift Bridge helm, Re-certification officers to get the needed crew certified on the auxilery crafts that the ship carried. "There will be notifactions in a pass down log for everyone to read when they start their shifts. This way everyone stays informed on the mission and assignment at paw. Don't hesitate to call me anytime for any reason. Questions or comments," she asked, pausing to give the others time to respond and ask questions.
Edward exchanged a brief look with Azur before raising his hand slightly to draw the lieutenant's attention. "With all due respect, lieutenant," he said, "I fly shuttles and runabouts, ma'am...not starships. That would be Ensign Vaer's area of expertise."
Miranda looked through the files and pulling up the two files, then smiled as she looked at both of them. "Merrrow..Well then think of this as an advancement of career within the fleet." Looking at Vaer, "Ensign Vaer, Gamma shift, you'll be incharge of Ensign Stuart for on the job training at ship's helm." Looking Stuart in the eyes, "If you're up to the challenge, Ensign Stuart, I'm going to keep you on Alpha shift in Shuttles. And assisting in re-certifications of shuttle piloting."
"Yes, ma'am," the two young officers replied in unison. A little mix-up amidst the shuffle of everything else being in a state of transition hardly seemed unjustified to Azur. Dealing with new personnel was always an interesting situation, given everything that was needed to adequately incorporate them into the department. One could only imagine how compounded the situation became when nearly everyone in the department was new to the ship...including the department head.
The young Trill glanced over to see Edward's reaction to the lieutenant's compromise and was not at all surprised to find his friend was taking the whole thing in stride as usual. Azur had never known Edward to take a particular interest in starship navigation, but that didn't mean he had no interest.
One of the Junior Grade Lieutenant that was placed inchage of the Re-Certification that the Lieutenant wanted, spoke up, "Ah... Ma'am? Lieutenant? Isn't against regulations to have personel working two shifts?"
Miranda looked at the Junior Grade, "I see no problem in assigning Ensign Stuart in having to work two shifts as we are still in port. Besides he won't be that terribly busy to be taxing on his performance or his alertness to his assigned duties. He may have to hustle to get from the bridge to the shuttle bay to assist you in Re-Certification. For there will be a shuttle with warp capibilities to transport any casualities that we may recieve in the future to a more stable hospital enviroment to recieve the proper treatment that the ship can't provide. Those personel will be needed to be certified to handle the shuttle as we discussed before these two..." she nodded in the direction of Vaer and Stuart, "...decided to show up late for a scheduled briefing."
The Junior Grade backed down with a nod at her reasoning, but made a note on his padd. "Yes Lieutenant Blackfur." He acquised the floor so others could speak.
Another Lieutenant, yet junior in time of rank, her ACFO, smiled, "I like the way you are getting additional crew within the department for your red alert back up helm crew for the bridge duty." Getting a return smile from Miranda. "I'll work with the other shift leaders to provide more personnel."
"Miaow.." Softly in a thoughtful tone, "If we run out of officers, try the enlisted within the department that show potentual and get them started on attaining Fleet Flight/Helm Certification for back-up pilots for both helm and shuttles." Miranda looked around at the group, giving a nod at the chosen few within the her department that she chose for being her subordinates with important tasks and shift leader's position. "If there aren't any more questions, dismissed."
She stood up, "I have a meeting with the ship's Captain to get things official and rolling!" Watching the others gather their PADDs in the process of leaving.
