"Alright," Joe said to Q Junior as the doors to Joe's office hissed shut and everyone found a seat. "First things first: what can you tell us about the people we're up against?"
Junior couldn't help rolling his eyes. It was an automatic reflex he hadn't really paid much attention to until recently. In fact, Junior didn't even know he'd done it until he saw the disapproving looks he was getting from the four officers seated around the room. Junior could tell they were willing to follow their Commanding Officer because they trusted him. The same did not hold true for Junior which meant he was going to have to be much more intentional about gaining their trust. "As I said in the briefing, centuries of evolutionary processes have brought these beings to a state of pure energy," Junior replied, "they don't usually spend much time on this plane of existence but...well, as you saw..."
"We did see, yes," Joe said. "Problem is, it baffled the heck out of our sensors. We're hoping you might have some idea as to how we can counter any further attacks."
Michael (PNPC) had not said much since their discovery of the abandoned mining asteroid. It had been bad enough drifting around in some unknown part of the Golden Discontinuity, but to actually lay eyes on that forsaken rock was unnerving, even for someone with as much field experience as him. Still, Michael was almost certain he out of all of them was the most familiar with this particular region of space which meant making sure his contributions to the conversation reflected that. Besides, the sooner they dealt with these energy-aliens, the sooner they would be able to leave the Discontinuity.
"I don't know much about these aliens," Michael offered, "but I do know we're going to have one heck of a time finding them in this mess." He motioned to the swirling clouds of plasma visible outside the office's small viewport as he spoke.
"Our tactical sensors aren't making much headway," Amy (PNPC) agreed. "It's rather frustrating. I'd like to be able to get a clearer picture of what's out there."
Michael nodded slowly. "I remember hearing something similar the last time I was here," he continued, "the Discontinuity is a lot like the Badlands in that respect. Which means even if we knew exactly what we were looking for, we probably wouldn't notice it until it was right on top of us."
"Unless," Drake (PNPC) interjected, "we had an early-warning detectection system - say, a small squad of starfighters."
Joe shot a look at his old friend. The pilot made sense - having those starfighters out there could offer another level of detection for the Yorktown, and the fighters themselves were unlikely to be noticed by an enemy.
"What do you think?" Joe asked Q Junior. "Do you think you can help outfit the Phantoms to detect the kind of energy put off by those aliens? They'd need to know what to look for."
Junior resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the question, if only because some part of him knew these humans were doing the best they could to help him...at least, he hoped they were doing their best. It was sometimes difficult to tell whether the looks he was getting were of curiosity or resentment. Unfortunately, given everything that he'd been through recently, it was hard not to let his own mind rush in its judgment. "I don't think that should be too difficult," he replied, "although I can't promise much. You technology is..."
"Primitive?" Drake suggested wryly.
"I was going to say limited," Junior corrected, "but I'll see what I can do."
"We'll also need to work that into the ship sensors," Joe said. "See if we can't extend them as much as possible. Of course, unless we plan on running every time -" His expression told them all what he thought of that idea. "- we need more than the ability to detect them. We need to be able to fight."
