[USS Yorktown, Deck 4, CPO Kelly Barton’s Quarters, Mission Day 3, 1100 hrs]

Chief Petty Officer Kelly Barton (NPC) was sitting in her quarters, staring at the food replicator. She had ordered a plain grilled chicken sandwich on white with a 20 oz. glass of orange juice and French fries. What she got was a plain dead white chicken with twenty oranges and a potato. Kelly couldn’t believe what the hell she was looking at; scratching her head and pondering just what went wrong.

“Well, so much for a quick lunch break. This is stupid.”

Kelly got out her tool kit and thought she would fix this problem, pronto. She tore off the side panel for the replicator and broke out her tricorder. Scanning the systems, there was nothing that seemed unusual. “Humpf!” Kelly reached in to the ODN network and brought her magnaspanner to bear on the replicator coils. The matter-energy conversion matrix seemed to be operating properly, or else her tricorder was on the fritz as well.

“The problem has got to be in the food synthesizer. How else would the replicator envision a dead chicken in place of a chicken sandwich?” said Kelly, to herself more than anything. “It isn’t enough to have to eat fake food, now the damn computer can’t even get that right!” After five minutes, Kelly threw her hydrospanner across the room, almost striking a glass vase.

“AAGGHH!”

Kelly walked away from the replicator. After fifteen minutes, she’d gotten nowhere. “I just don’t know about this crap. I deal with structural integrity fields and environmental controls. I should be able to adjust a little ole’ food replicator.”

She took out her Cutter Beam and stared at the ODN network cables for a couple of minutes. Deciding that wasn’t the best choice, she put it back in her tool bag and started a level three diagnostic. After about ten minutes, her tricorder started bleeping wildly at her.
Kelly had about all she could stand. Taking three steps back, she ran forward and kicked the side of the replicator with her boot. She then put all her tools away, replaced the side panel and ordered her food again. This time, the replicator issued forth a fried chicken patty on white bread with a burnt fries and a large glass of water. Somewhat satisfied, Kelly took the tray, walked over to her desk, sat down and ate in silence. Every so often, she would pick out a small feather from her mouth.
