Episode 1.0 - "Enduring Legacy"
Location: Holodeck I, USS Yorktown
Timeline: Mission Day 04, 0800 Hours
ON: [[Holodeck I, USS Yorktown, Mission Day 04, 0800 Hours]]
Lieutenant Amanda Owens (NPC) was not her usual cheerful self today. In fact, she was rather flustered and feeling more than a bit rushed. Though she had arrived by 1800 the previous day, she had been unable to arrange a meeting with her immediate superior. Considering many officers were still in the process of boarding and settling in, she decided to try again later. She had certainly not expected to be woken up at 0730 this morning with a message waiting: training at 0800 in Holodeck I. Now, as she raced through the corridors, she hoped she didn't look as ridiculous as she felt.
Just before she rounded the bend to the holodeck, Amy slowed and regulated her breathing. It wouldn't do well for her to show up looking out of breath at her first meeting with both her superior and subordinates. When she finally rounded the corner, though, she was in for a surprise; eleven Security personnel were waiting for her, only two of them comissioned officers - and neither of those bore the insignia of a Lieutenant Commander. In an instant, Amy realized what was going on - she was being thrown right into the fire on her first day. Without letting her apprehension show, she stepped forward to greet her team.
No sooner had she approached the assembled security team than the large holodeck door opened once more with a hydraulic hiss. Michael (PNPC) entered the room at an even pace, followed closely by Gunnery Sergeant Victoria Hernandez (NPC) and the members of Alpha Squad. The marines waited little time in making their way over to one side of the holodeck grid where they immediately assembled in formation to await further instruction. Each of them were dressed in the light combat gear typical for general training or standard away mission assignment and carried a marine variant of the standard phaser rifle.
"Good morning, lieutenant," Michael said with somewhat of a smile, turning his attention to the senior-most member of the security personnel present.
"Good morning," Amy replied, doing her best to seem calm and unbothered. "Lieutenant Amanda Owens, Assistant Chief Sec/Tac. I take it you're Lieutenant Watters?" Truth be told, Amy hadn't looked up much about the Marine CO; she hadn't expected to be meeting him this soon. In fact, she hadn't thought she'd be making this introduction.
Michael studied the woman a moment. It didn't take a Betazoid to see she was more than a little uncomfortable being asked to fly solo this soon without having had the opportunity to meet with her supervisor. Then again, hadn't he found himself in a similar position not too long ago aboard the Endeavour? He set those thoughts aside for the time being and fixed his attention on the present. "That I am," he answered simply.
"I have to be honest with you, Lieutenant," Amy admitted quietly enough so as not to be overheard by the enlisted men. "I'm more of a Tactical officer, and Lieutenant Commander Thompson kind of surprised me with this whole joint training session. If you don't mind, I'll be deferring to you as far as how we go about doing it. I don't know why the commander isn't here, but I'll do my best in his stead."
"Nothing like diving head first into a new assignment," Michael said, "but I appreciate your candor and I have a feeling things are going to work out quite swimmingly."
She certainly seems surprised Joe thought to himself as he watched Watters and Owens discussing the training out of earshot of the rest of the personnel. But at least she knows better than to let her subordinates know that. When Joe had approached Watters with his plan for their first joint training, the Marine had seemed a bit dubious. Joe couldn't blame the man; after all, Joe was partially using this session to break in a new assistant, which could come at the expense of the Marines' training. He hoped it wouldn't be too detrimental, and it might even be useful. For now, though, he was remaining under the guise of PFC "Tommy" and letting Watters take the lead.
