Technicians and operations personnel went about their business without really giving much notice to the young man in command red standing off to one side of the Yorktown's main shuttlebay. Christian (PNPC) had spent the last several weeks familiarizing himself with nearly every aspect of Starfleet's newest Legacy-class starship including those crewmembers he would most likely be interacting with on a regular basis. It was a daunting task when one considered he was expected to act as the captain's representative when attending to those day-to-day administrative matters which might otherwise consume the commanding officer's time, but starship administration was something Christian had become quite familiar with in the last thirty-two months.
The Yorktown had only just arrived at Starbase 386 when they'd been informed the new commanding officer would be coming aboard via shuttlecraft momentarily. Though Christian had exchanged a few brief correspondances with Captain Naros in the days leading up to the Yorktown's departure from Earth, this would be his first time meeting the captain in person. Anxiety wasn't something the young petty officer was accustomed to feeling. Still, he found himself idly tapping his foot as he waited for the captain's shuttle to appear.
Several moments passed before the familiar outline of a Type-11 shuttlecraft appeared in the distance. It soon grew larger and more distinct as it passed between the Yorktown's twin warp nacelles on approach for the main shuttlebay. Christian watched as the shuttle slipped through the faint blue atmospheric forcefield spanning the open shuttlebay door, glided forward several feet, and touched down gently on the hangar deck. He took a few steps forward until he was standing directly in front of the shuttle's ramp which had already begun lowering in preparation for disembarking.
No sooner had the ramp made contact with the deck plating than a man appeared in the shuttle's open hatchway. He paused to survey the surrounding area before fixing his gaze directly on the young petty officer. "Permission to come aboard," he asked in the time-honored tradition.
"Permission granted, Captain Naros," Christian replied, "Welcome aboard the Yorktown. I hope we haven't kept you waiting, sir."
"Not at all, Mister Bates," Tobias assured the young man, "The Orlando arrived day before yesterday and isn't due to depart again for another few days. It has given me sufficient time to bring my successor up to speed and to prepare for my own transfer." The El-Aurian paused when he reached the foot of the ramp and took another look around the cavernous room. Having spent the last year aboard a Legacy-class starship, Tobias knew he would be recognizing many similarities between the two.
Christian remembered how wide-eyed he'd been his first time seeing the Yorktown and how that feeling had persisted for several days afterward as he'd become more familiar with his surroundings. Some of it probably had to do with the Yorktown being his newest assignment and the uncertainty that usually came with having to learn a whole new living environment. At the same time, not many people could say they'd served aboard a Legacy-class starship before. He waited another moment for the captain to finish looking around before speaking once more. "Would you care for a tour, sir," Christian asked.
Completing his visual survey of the shuttlebay, Tobias brought his attention back to the yeoman standing before him. He had served as the Orlando-A's Executive Officer for over twelve months, consulted with Lieutenant Warrington during the Yorktown's construction, and spent considerable time studying the ship's specifications. Still, a tour sounded like the perfect opportunity for Tobias to be introduced to his new assignment. "That sounds like an excellent idea, Mister Bates," he said with a small smile, "Shall we begin?"
