Federation Membership: Bajor

Posted on Thu Mar 21st, 2013 @ 1:02pm by Captain Tobias Naros

All,

The Department of Research & Development recently received an inquiry as to the membership status of Bajor within the United Federation of Planets. Because we know there are several among our community whose primary or secondary characters are of Bajoran heritage, we felt it would be best to share this information with the Commanding Officers. At this point in time, there are no plans to add the information to the Horizon Fleet Wiki, so please feel free to pass this information along to the members of your simulations.

Now, on to the status of Bajoran membership…

Canonical evidence from The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine would seem to indicate the process of petitioning for Federation membership initially began in 2369 with Bajor passing into Protectorate status and eventually reaching a point where they were ready to ratify their entrance into the Federation by 2373. It was at this time, however, that Captain Benjamin Sisko experienced a vision and convinced the Bajorans to delay seeking membership for the time being (DS9: “Rapture”).

This proved to be especially significant in light of the Dominion War. Had Bajor become a Federation member world, they would likely have experienced invasion by the Jem’hadar and it would have been even more difficult for Starfleet to re-take the system from Dominion control. Instead, Bajor signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion which protected them from the worst of Dominion occupation.

Following the conclusion of the war and the signing of the Treaty of Bajor in 2375, discussions regarding Federation membership most likely resumed. Memory Beta lists 29 September 2376 as the date Bajor officially became a member of the United Federation of Planets. This information comes from the DS9 novel Unity, the summary of which does not really seem to coincide with what we would consider to be Trek canon.

So to make a long story short…

Bajor officially became a member of the Federation in 2376. Like many worlds, local authority rests in the Bajoran government while federal authority is given to the Federation government. Responsibility for protection of the Bajoran system as well as other Bajoran assets is shared by both Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia.

If there are any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this information, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Research & Development at techAThorizonfleetDOTnet.

Respectfully,

Rear Admiral Lorian Tharos
Director of Research & Development
Cultural Archival Society Chair
