Federation Starship Gone "Missing" En Route to Cardassia Prime
Posted on Fri Dec 7th, 2012 @ 3:25pm by Captain Tobias Naros
An unnamed Starfleet official has been reported as saying USS Yorktown, attached to Task Force 22, has recently disappeared while en route to Cardassia Prime.
The officer in question, who is stationed aboard Deep Space Three and wishes to remain nameless, has reported that the Legacy-class USS Yorktown recently disappeared from long-range sensors without any indication of where she had gone or what her intentions were. There has been no subspace communication with the ship since her disappearance and rumors persist that it may have something to do with the mysterious disappearance of several civilian merchant vessels in and around the Black Cluster.
Readers may recall the recent fanfare surrounding completion of the Yorktown as the latest in a long line of what is perhaps Starfleet's most illustrious unsung legacy. Already, she has distinguished herself as having outperformed all expectations throughout construction and field testing as well as becoming the second Legacy-class starship to be assigned to the Eighth "Horizon" Fleet. It is also worth noting the selection of Tobias Naros, former Executive Officer of the USS Orlando and USS Orlando-A under Vice Admiral Quinn Androski, as the Yorktown's Commanding Officer.
The Yorktown is known to have departed Starbase 386 only a few days ago with orders to proceed to Cardassia Prime where Federation negotiators have been working closely with members of the Detapa Council in regards to the possibility of Cardassian support of relief efforts within the Romulan Star Empire. Perhaps officials within the Eighth Fleet Admiralty as well as the Federation Diplomatic Corps felt the presence of one of Starfleet's much-hearlded diplomatic explorers would help solidify negotiation efforts.
We managed to catch up with Vice Admiral Iluvar, recently named Eighth Fleet Deputy Chief-of-Staff by Admiral Olivia Tavez, while on an official visit to Deep Space Five to assess the situation along the Federation core-ward frontier. "Captain Naros has demonstrated himself to be a level-headed officer with a long, distinguished career in Starfleet," the admiral is quoted as saying when asked about the decision send the Yorktown to Cardassia, "Few truly understand the level of destruction suffered by the Cardassians following the end of the [Dominion] war. The fact they would even be willing to entertain the idea of providing logistical support to the Romulan Empire is quite telling. We felt the situation demanded someone who could address any concerns without losing sight of the bigger picture."
Members of the Eighth Fleet admiralty are refusing to comment on the Yorktown's disappearance, however, and no official word has come out about the possible connection to the disappearance of civilian vessels near the Black Cluster.
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
