Starfleet Tricorders Used Between 2370 and the Present

TR-590 Mark X Tricorder (2371-2383) The TR-590 Mark X tricorder was introduced in 2371 as successor to the TR-580 Mark VII tricorder. This tricorder design, while nearly identical in physical design and control interfaces, was streamlined and made much smaller than its predecessors with a much more angular design. A durable casing design of duritanium allowed the TR-590 to function in otherwise hostile environments such as underwater, temperatures of five-hundred Kelvin, the upper atmosphere of a planet, and planets suffering nuclear winters. TR-590 tricorders were capable of performing a variety of tasks ranging from recording time trials to playing holographic messages. They featured directory structures and built-in universal translators to facilitate organization and analysis of sensor data. Sensor emissions from TR-590s were reported to cause unpredictable changes in certain temporal distortions. To prevent such interference with other objects, the TR-580 could be configured to perform passive scans or even be locked into a continuous scan, thereby recording data even when stowed. The TR-590 tricorder was capable of interfacing with a variety of other computer systems including non-Starfleet networks and could even be linked with other tricorder units to form a small, independent network. TR-590-B Mark X Tricorder (2379-Present) The TR-590-B Mark X tricorder was introduced in 2379 as successor to the TR-590 Mark X tricorder. This tricorder design represented another iteration of Starfleet tricorder which differed from its predecessors by departing from the distinct, flip-open style. Distinguished by a slim, PADD-like appearance, the tricorder in use aboard Starfleet vessels in the late 2370s featured a large touchscreen interface. Silver in color, it was trimmed with black pads at the bottom and sides with several buttons at the top. These buttons could be covered by a small, hinged door lined with indicator lights. A durable casing design made of duritanium still allowed the TR-590-B to function in otherwise hostile environments such as underwater, in temperatures of five-hundred degrees Kelvin, the upper atmosphere of a planet, and on planets suffering nuclear winters. TR-590-B tricorders were capable of performing a variety of tasks equal to and even greater than that of their predecessors including the ability to interface with starship systems such as force-field control. TR-620 Mark XI Tricorder (2383-Present) The TR-620 Mark XI tricorder was introduced in 2383 as successor to the TR-590 Mark X tricorder. This tricorder design featured the familiar hinged cover design but contained more touch-control surfaces in place of toggle switches. A dark-grey, durable casing design made of duritanium allowed the TR-620 to function in otherwise hostile environments such as underwater, in temperatures of five-hundred degrees Kelvin, the upper atmosphere of a planet, and on planets suffering from the effects of a nuclear winter. TR-620 tricorders were capable of performing a variety of tasks equal to and even greater than that of their predecessors including the ability to interface with starship systems such as force-field control. TR-620 Mark XI Medical Tricorder (2383-Present) The TR-620 Mark XI Medical tricorder was introduced in 2383 as a variant of the TR-620 Mak XI tricorder and successor to the TR-590 Mark X tricorder. Medical TR-620 tricorders were essentially similar in design to that of the standard TR-620 tricorder with the same available features and interface. The major difference between the two versions was the addition of a small antenna scanner capable of providing detailed scans of an entire individual or giving focus to a singe area. It was not necessary to use the scanner for the Medical TR-620 to function. A dark-grey, durable casing design made of duritanium allowed the TR-620 to function in otherwise hostile environments such as underwater, in temperatures of five-hundred degrees Kelvin, the upper atmosphere of a planet, and on planets suffering from the effects of a nuclear winter. TR-620 tricorders were capable of performing a variety of tasks equal to and even beyond those of the TR-590. Perhaps most important was the TR-590 tricorders' ability to communicate with many Starfleet devices including PADDs and starship library computers. They were also designed to work closely with the surgical support frames attached to biobeds.
